The Vegas Soulcialite Peeks Through the Looking-Glass

Jabbawockeez

Oooohhh…Ahhhh, Fancy.

I don’t watch a lot of television—at least not in the reality shows, make-over, or dance competition category. So when I had the opportunity to catch the Jabbawockeez show, ‘MUS.i.C’ at the Monte Carlo hotel back in 2010 with my friend Kanette, I wasn’t really all that excited. I was informed by my friend that they were the winners of ‘America’s Best Dance Crew’ and that they were really good. I believed her, she has great taste, but nonetheless, I still wasn’t sure how they were going to keep me entertained with 90 min of just dancing.

Well I was pleasantly surprised and loved the show.

So when I heard they had a brand new show opening this month, I jumped at the chance for a preview. Since I last saw them they’ve moved into their own theater—that was custom designed for their show. How cool is that for a used-to-be-garage-dance-group? I don’t think the multi-cultural, eight member team will have any problems filling the plush 830 seats, since their last residency theater held more than 1,200 people.

Last Friday was my sneak peek at their new show, “PRiSM”–which slyly matches the shape of the Luxor hotel where they will perform under contract for the next six years.

They didn’t want to give too much away, but dancer Chris ‘Cristyle’ Gatdula, a sort of Las Vegas native said the new show has a bit of a ‘Broadway musical feel to it’.

It opens with the Jabbowocky…Jabbowock…Jabbow? You know what I mean–the singular form. Anyway, one of them–‘Mr. Nonsense’ (Kevin ‘KB’ Brewer) comes whiffling down the tulgey stairs, in a galumph like way towards the stage where he instantly commands the audience’s attention.  He and his fellow dancers are dressed in black and white costumes and of course, donning their signature white face masks.

The intimate setting of the theater gives you the feeling that you’ve stepped into an alternate world full of sights and sounds of chaos, however, as the show progresses, color comes in to restore the balance. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet will light up the stage as the Jabbawockeez bend and stretch across in various synchronized movements, fulfilling back-to-front flips, spins and twists to electrifying sounds.

Kevin ‘KB’ Brewer explained that the choreography will showcase every emotion as they tell the story of the color of music. Sitting there in the dark I had a very Willy Wonka merged with an Alice in Wonderland experience—which again, is appropriate for the group.

After the press Q&A

After the press Q&A

The group collectively comes up with their show ideas and describes the process as free and open. Everyone makes suggestions and they just do whatever works. Resembling little boys still playing with their best friends out back in their tree house, the guys imagine the biggest, coolest thing they can come up with and then try and make it happen.

They guys made the show appear very light and fun—great for all ages, and I’m sure it is, but I’d bet money there is a deeper meaning to it all…something that may be hard to understand, like the poem their name comes from. I can’t wait to see it in its entirety so I can over analyze like I do.

Shows are Sunday—Monday 7pm., Thursday 7pm., Friday and Saturday at 7pm and 9:30 pm. Tickets start at $55.

Cheers!
