The Vegas Soulcialite Licks Her Fingers

The Outlaw Burger

We have more than 300 sunny days and warm nights here in the desert, but for some reason the words barbeque and Las Vegas just don’t mix. It really is hard to find good ‘que in this town.

You would think it would be easy with all the southern transplants—I believe most of the southern immigrants must have had to leave their recipes and secrets at the Nevada state border.

However, my friend Downtown Steve recently told me he found the best barbeque in all of Las Vegas. My first thought was “that couldn’t have been too hard, most of the places here are Lame.” <— notice the capital ‘L’.

Even though I was skeptical I was still uber excited to give it a try.

So we headed on over to Highland Street so I could taste Rollin Smoke Barbeque for myself. First, for you locals, I know you’re wondering where the heck is Highland? It’s the street the runs alongside the 15 with all the umm, ‘gentleman’s clubs’.

Anyhoo, it’s a small and out of the way and that adds to its charm…though, I do wish it was downtown.

I ordered the trio platter, which comes with a choice of 3 different types of meat and a side item. I love that I can have that much variety without it being a ‘special order’, because sometimes you don’t just want chicken or ribs or sausage  you want it all. Anyhoo, I had ribs, chicken and pulled pork with a side of fried okra. D.S had the ‘Outlaw Burger’, a big giant burger topped with all kinds of nonsense. (I ate half of it)

The meat was very tender and the sauce is nice and has just the right amount of kick to it. I really, really liked the fried okra and the jalapeño coleslaw was tasty–especially when I mixed it with my pulled pork and piled it on  my toasted dinner roll. Best believe I will return to taste the other side dishes, especially the baked beans and the mac-n-cheese… Overall, I didn’t want to slap my mama, but it was better than every other place I’ve been to in Vegas.

The Trio $13

I should have been full by now and really I was…however, I had to try the desserts–if only for you, my readers.  The selection isn’t large but they do have your southern staples including peach cobbler and banana pudding. D.S wanted the pudding because the gentlemen who took our order said he just finished making it. Let me start by saying, I don’t like banana pudding…I would never order it, and almost always turn it down at someone’s house. If I am forced, I mean offered some, I usually just eat the cookies, but this stuff was really good—I even ate the banana slices, which is really saying something.

They don’t serve booze, but the ice tea is good…

Prices average $7-$28.

So finally, some old fashioned, down home barbeque in Las Vegas that won’t cost you an arm and a leg. It’s about dang time.

Cheers!

The Vegas Soulcialite Honors Class

Mary Wilson and I after her show at the Suncoast casino.

Mary Wilson and I after her show at the Suncoast casino.

For some reason the theme of the last week has been ‘class’.

I watched one of my favorite movies, Chicago last weekend and one of the songs that was actually cut from the film is called “Class”. Velma (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Mama (Queen Latifah) sing about how there was a lack of it in the 1920’s…

“Oh, there ain’t no gentelmen to open up the doors,

There ain’t no ladies now there’s only pigs and whores

And even kids’ll knock you down so’s they can pass

Nobody’s got no class!!!

Whatever happened to old values

And fine morals

And good breeding?

Whatever happened to class?

Well they might just be knocked off their rocker if they saw what I see via Facebook and out on the street. Sheesh, I have pearl clutching moments at least once a day.

What happened to being a lady? Letting a man open the door for you and wearing pantyhose?

I know, I know, this is Vegas and it’s hot, but sometimes in most business environments a lady should wear pantyhose, please.

I feel like there is a real disconnect between having fun and decorum–we can cut loose without cutting up, can’t we?

I had the opportunity to meet, interview and watch one of the original Supremes perform over the weekend. Mary Wilson has been performing for more than 50 years and even though I wasn’t born when she was living through her 20’s and 30’s, my research shows me that she is and has always has been a lady. She laughed and flirted with the audience and wore some fantastic dresses, but she was so graceful about it and I don’t think it’s just because of her age. She was taught to be a lady.

BTW: It was a great show and if you have the chance to see her perform, I would jump at it.

Lena Horne passed away at the age  of 92, and she will always be remembered for her grace and dignity. I’m sure living in a time where she was publicly disrespected and denied basic rights made her feel a certain kind of way. Angry? I’m sure of it. Frustrated? Probably more times than she could count. Pissed off? You betcha.  However, I couldn’t find a single article or picture of her yelling, screaming or otherwise acting a monkey fool on television.

Both women of that era emitted a constant elegance; it’s in their refined walk…the split of their dress–just high enough to be sexy, the cut just low enough to acknowledge the presence of breasts and their sexual significance–they alluded to sex, but they didn’t put it on a buffet table.

Shenanigans went on behind the scenes… we’ve all heard about Marilyn and her affair with the President. Diana Ross had a love child with Berry Gordy…but it was all kept behind closed doors and not aired on television or in glossy magazines.

Bottom line: these women were hot and chased by many men and they never twereked in booty shorts in front of strangers. They had strong views, opinions and I’m sure some feuds between co-workers but they didn’t resort to pulling out weaves and cursing on red carpets.

I guess I’m saying all this to say, you can be sexy, beautiful and post pictures of you being all of that and then some, but every shot doesn’t need to be of your ample bottom or bosom. Leave a lot more to the imagination and conduct yourself with respect in public…there is a time and place to settle disagreements.

If you have time to post that many pictures of yourself in your car, in the bathroom, in the bed “just waking up” then you probably aren’t working that hard at your career and life goals.

I’m just saying…

Cheers!

The Vegas Soulcialite Loves Detroit

DETROPIA_filmstill1_coys-gasmasks_byTonyHardmon-1

I’m a Detroiter at heart. I wasn’t born there and I’ve lived in other cities for long stretches but Detroit is the first place I remember. It’s where my memories begin and in some instances end. I met some of my dearest friends within the city limits of the Motor City and I’ve never owned a foreign car.

When I go back—at least once a year, I pretty much stay in the city.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Las Vegas and plan on being here for a long time—heck, I may never leave permanently. But Detroit will always have my heart.

So of course, I get defensive when people talk about my city. We all know there are issues; unemployment, foreclosures, abandoned buildings, corruption in the government, yada, yada, yada…It’s been splashed across the national news for years now but, just like you can’t talk bad about my family—even the no good members, you can’t be talkin’ ‘bout my city, yo.

“Detroit was the birthplace of the middle class, an industrial utopia where anyone who worked hard enough could experience the American dream.” Regular hard working men and women with little education came north and were able to take care of themselves; even excel and become homeowners and breed college educated children. The opportunities in this industry town made it the fastest growing city in the world at one time.

There is a documentary titled ‘Detropia’ that I had the opportunity to watch yesterday during my ‘downtime,’ it chronicled the plight of the city through the eyes of various residents including: A retired teacher/blues bar owner, a video blogger, president of an auto union chapter, young transplant artists, an opera impresario, and a gang of illegal copper “scrappers”.

Synopsis of the movie:

“The Motor City reboots itself will set the example for countless other post-industrial cities with similar fates. And today the entire country is watching to see if this storied metropolis has the courage, creativity, and grit to reinvent itself — or if it will instead implode.

Detropia is a cinematic tapestry that chronicles the lives of several Detroiters trying to survive and make sense of what is happening to their city.” make up an unlikely chorus that illuminates the tale of both a city and a country in a soul-searching mood, grasping for a new identity.”

They all give their perspectives on where Detroit is going and where it’s been. “This is a city in the throes of transition. Those who have stuck with the city are at the breaking point while artists and curious outsiders flock to the city in search of inspiration and opportunity.”

The movie shows just how frustrated the long term residents are but, at the same time it illustrates how the new ones are moving in and taking advantage of the very cheap real estate and open land. I think they both can/should learn from each other.

Really, in the end all I can do is hope and, watch to see what will happen to the city that holds the memories of my first kiss, first car, where I prayed, and laughed and cried with people who are no longer with me. It’s the only place I know I can go at the drop of a hat and someone will pick me up from the airport and feed me a home cooked meal. And I need that. I need to be able to lay my head down in a place that remembers me and where we speak the same language…paczki, Michigan left, superman ice cream, Fay-go pop, Better Made, but most importantly when I start singing “Hello Detroit”, everyone will sing along with me.

Home is where your heart is...

The Vegas Soulcialite Likes Variety

Very impressive, indeed.

Very impressive, indeed.

We are known for our over the top shows; bright lights, full bands and orchestras, feathers and dancers, aerialists flying through the air and acrobats tumbling across the stage. Everyone in Vegas, locals and tourists alike expect to be amazed.

But just like any other job the workers can get bored with the same ‘ole-same ‘ole. Imagine having to flip and fly through the air 5-6 days a week!

Jump and flip to this pole.

Fly (gracefully) off the stage on the count of 3.

Hit your mark, spin, then catch the girl.

Sheesh! Those Cirque performers could probably do most of their acts in their sleep! Boring!

Ok, maybe it doesn’t sound so monotonous to those of us who work with our feet firmly planted on the ground, but just like those of us doing what we love–or at least some variation of it, they still have a need to stretch their talents and a desire keep their creative juices flowing.

We all need to remember why we’re doing what we’re doing in the first place. For the love of ____<—(insert your heart’s passion here).

Over the past week I’ve met more than a few of these artists and had the opportunity to see them perform their own original dances, comedy, dramas, etc…it has been a wonderfully inspiring experience.

Shows rarely start early—remember these are after work projects and most shows on the strip don’t start until 7 or 10 pm.

Last Wednesday…well Thursday if I’m being technical about it, I headed over to the Baobab Theater a little after midnight for the ‘Ok, Ok! Amos Glick Variety Show’Amos is a clown in Le Reve by day, however, his show is a hodge-podge of acts including, but never limited to: interpretive dance, a somewhat perverted balloon making comedian, juggling, a mime performance, and a step percussion group that goes by the name of Molodi.

It was all very cool to watch, I really was amazed…It felt less like a show and more like I was hanging out in the basement with friends after work having a few drinks and watching them mess around.  Everything wasn’t planned or perfect but that was a part of the fun. Things dropped, beer overflowed, the audience laughed, the performers laughed and everyone had a great time.

The show doesn’t have a regular schedule but you can keep up with them on Facebook.

Everyone loves a funny mime.

Everyone loves a funny mime.

 Molodi

Molodi

Molodi just happens to be performing again tonight at a normal time (8pm) on the Baobab stage. So I’m super excited to get a chance to see their ‘complete experiment in body percussion’ so soon after being introduced to them. Don’t worry an interview and full review to come later this week.

By the way, if you’re in Town Square around 4pm today you may see their flash mob performance as well…and you might just see me join in. Well, maybe.  Update: Flash mob has been cancelled…I will let you know if they reschedule.

Cheers!

The Vegas Soulcialite Dances In The Pool

Literally dancing in the pool...

Literally dancing in the pool…

I will start this post by saying I LOVE the Cosmopolitan Hotel. It’s hands down my favorite resort on the Strip. Plus, I like their commercials…they don’t make a whole lot of sense… but they’re pretty cool.

The resort itself is fantabulously classy and chic but at the same time it caters to my age group—which, in my opinion helps it avoid the excess snoot factor that some high-brow spots can have. However, what I really love are the musical acts they bring. They’re constantly bringing in some of the best talent—and not necessarily mainstream ‘big’ acts, just good, honest artists who put their everything into a performance.

Last Thursday (April 25, 2013) was no exception, the extremely talented Aloe Blacc graced the stage at the Boulevard pool  where he danced and sang his heart out—I would like to believe he was singing directly to me.

The hotel’s multi level pool overlooks the Strip and has every amenity you could need on a hot summer day or night in this case. Large comfy lounge areas, cabanas, full service bars (which serves a pretty good whisky sour) and lots of eye candy.

The lounge chaise-like things are my favorite, there’s room for more than a few people and everyone can dangle their feet in the pool with a great view of the stage.

Aloe Blacc Singing "Hey Brother" on stage.

Aloe Blacc Singing “Hey Brother” on stage.

Getting back to Aloe Blacc, he really is one of my favorite singers in the whole wide world. You may not have heard of him before, but you have now and you can thank me later for the introductions. If you’ve heard any of his songs it’s probably “I Need a Dollar” which came out in 2007.  I don’t know exactly what genre he’s classified under but, I would describe it as old school funk with a lot of soul. He sometimes kind of reminds me of Anthony Hamilton, however, his lyrics are stronger and more profound—think Marvin Gaye or Sam Cooke.

He described is last album: ‘Good Things’ like this to ‘Stonesthrow.com’:

“Aloe, who refers to the project as his report on present conditions—joblessness, homeless, the misappropriation of wealth, pillaging of resources, and a universal lack of compassion from the capitalism at-large under which we all function, but some struggle to survive.”

See…deep stuff, man.

Aloe Blacc on the big screen singing to all of the strip.

Aloe Blacc on the big screen singing to all of the strip.

I’d never had the opportunity to see him perform before and I actually only found out about the show a few hours before he was scheduled to start. Luckily, sometimes I have the ability to be extremely flexible and spontaneous like that… I’m so glad I did because Aloe played some new stuff off his upcoming album that sounded just amazing!

It was the perfect night for my first outdoor concert of the year…I let the breeze wash over me as I danced and twirled in the wading pool under the Las Vegas lights…it really couldn’t have been much better than that.

An added cherry on top is that the new stuff I spent the evening jamming to should be out by midsummer and I am scheduled to interview him about it! Yay! (Insert happy dance—snoopy style, of course) I can’t wait to share that interview with you guys.

It will be interesting to hear more about this new project and hopefully I can introduce a new favorite artist to those of you not yet familiar.

Here is a rendition of Bill Wither’s “Ain’t No Sunshine” I found, it’s so freaking good…I’m digging the guitar player’s new album too.

There will be a few more concerts coming up this summer that I can’t wait for, including Gary Clark, Jr. That show will be epic, and I can’t wait to dance to “Bright Lights, Big City” under my city’s bright lights.

Cheers!

The Vegas Soulcialite Plays Dress-up

Yup, I wore flip-flops to the rodeo...

Yup, I wore flip-flops to the rodeo…

So the saying ‘be careful what you wish for’ has to come to pass in my life. Before I started this blog I didn’t know what I was going to write about. I mean I did stuff, but I didn’t feel like I had enough things to talk about to keep anyone interested in the ‘Vegas Soulcialite’. I’m a long haul type of girl.

Well looky here, I have been so busy doing stuff I haven’ had time to tell you about all the nonsense I’ve encountered. I can’t believe I have almost two weeks worth fun to gab with you about… So, I apologize and will try to do a better job of keeping up.

Most of the stuff I did/saw/experienced was at the tail end; so it wasn’t anything I could encourage you to do, at least not until it comes around again anyway.

So first we are going to do a weekend wrap up of last week and then, fingers crossed, I will have another one for you tomorrow.

Okay, enough lollygagging, let’s get on with it!

My friend Downtown Steve is a real mover and shaker–and a great real estate agent. You will probably see his name many times on this blog because he is one of my favorite people to hang out with, plus he is a fellow downtowner (obviously). Over the weekend Steve and I were pretty much joined at the hip.

Saturday:

I may be just a bit biased but I feel like I live in one of the best neighborhoods in all of Vegas. We look out for each other in our ‘hood, support neighborhood business ventures, we keep up with everyone’s accomplishments, gather and celebrate as often as we can and best of all No HOA’s!

One such shin-dig is our monthly movie in park series. We kicked it off this year with the family friendly “Pew-Wee’s Big Adventure”. We even had the local impersonator drop by to get us in the 80’s mood.

Me and PeeWee aka Drew Lepkowski.

Me and PeeWee aka Drew Lepkowski.

This month’s selection was “The Great Gatsby”<–not this one, but the 1970’s version. To my chagrin, there wasn’t a Robert Redford impersonator there to get us in the mood (insert sad face). Nonetheless, it was a blast. Everyone dressed in prohibition era garb and played bocce ball and croquet on the lawn. I’ve seen ‘Gatsby’ a few times but it was Steve’s first time…I think he liked it. The acting is over the top but that’s kind of how they did stuff back then. What I love about the movie is the lesson on karma and how one person’s deception can cause another’s demise. It’s a good lesson to take to heart.

Downtown Steve is the Great Gatsby!

Downtown Steve is the Great Gatsby!

Next month’s selection will be a Clint Eastwood western…should be interesting, especially if I can find a cute cowboy hat and my daisy dukes. These events are open to everyone, so come hang at the Huntridge Circle Park with us.

Sunday:

Surprisingly, Steve hadn’t tired of my company from the night before and had room in his little red convertible, so he had the honor of taking me to my very first rodeo. So with the top down, scarf tied around the curls and my Jackie O glasses on, we hit the road.

The Clark County Fair Grounds are pretty much out in the sticks otherwise known as Logandale–about a 50 minute drive from downtown Las Vegas. It was worth it though, the food was great. Better than great, I was in fat girl heaven. I ate roasted corn-on-the-cob covered in butter and spicy Mexican salt, spicy sausage and pepper sandwiches and drank a LOT of beer. Hey, when in Rome…

However, as cool as it sounds to be a cowgirl, baby; I can’t say I cared much for the rodeo itself. It seems mean to let little calves loose and then chase them down, grab them by their horns and tie them up. How is that fun, especially for the little cow? Again, it seems like an unfair ‘sport’. It’s certainly not my native city girl culture, so maybe I just don’t get it. Besides, manure just isn’t my scent.

He doesn't look like he's having fun at all...

He doesn’t look like he’s having fun at all…

Him either...

Him either…

Either way, I would go again—if only for the food. Of course there are rides but I didn’t get on any because again, I drank a LOT of beer and that just didn’t seem like a good idea.

Driving back to civilization Steve got a call to come check out a concert on the Strip. A vintage Pop/Ska/2-tone band from London called “The Selector” was playing at the Hard Rock on the Strip. So once again, off we went to listen to some island sounds.

I wasn’t familiar with the band but I really enjoyed their energy. They seemed to love what they were doing and I always love musicians who have so much passion for their craft. I was especially impressed when I found out the lead singer, Pauline Black was 59. I hope I still feel that passion for my craft and can exude that much energy at her age. There seemed to be a special dance for their music, something I was very unfamiliar with but I will try my best to describe it. Imagine a tribal-like Smurf dance with lots of hunched over kicking in a circle around an imaginary fire pit…then throw in some air punching. Did you get all that?

Have you ever in your life seen a man sweat through a suit like that? He was putting in some work.

Again, she is almost 60 years old...

Again, she is almost 60 years old…

I felt very left out that I didn’t know these ‘moves’ but at the same time relieved my beer buzz had worn off so I didn’t get the urge to join in–Thank goodness for small miracles.

My night and very eclectic weekend ended well after 2 am. My feet hurt, and Monday was for sure a *cheeseburger morning– but it was so worth it.

Cheers!

*Cheeseburger=The best hangover cure.

The Vegas Soulcialite’s Redbox Review

Steel Town

I’m a girl with discerning tastes. Some…well, many would say I’m picky and don’t really like much of anything. I don’t believe that’s true, it’s just the older I get the harder it is to please me. But I think that’s the way it should be. With every passing year we see more and more and I for one don’t want to keep seeing the same thing over and over again.

I feel as though people—me included, should be constantly trying to step their game up.

I rented a few movies this weekend but the one that stood out was “Won’t Back Down”. It had a stellar cast of great actors: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Viola Davis, Holly Hunter, Rosie Perez, Ving Rhames and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.

In a nutshell: Single mom Jaime Fitzpatrick (Gyllenhaal) with limited resources has a daughter who needs a little extra help at school. The school she is zoned for is the worst of the worst and she feels stuck. She can’t afford private school or tutors, and the teachers are either zombies or bound by bureaucratic red-tape and can’t help.  She begs for help from Nora Alberts (Davis) a teacher who is struggling to survive in the poorly run, unionized school while trying to piece her life together. They have to overcome the typical bullying from the powers-that-be and struggle to do what’s right for the greater good.

The charter school lottery scene really resonated with me. The look on their faces–Jaime and her daughter Malia (Emily Lind—she plays the young Amanda in the television show ‘Revenge’) is a defining moment in the film. They are distraught, scared and nervous. it’s as though you see them both realize for the first time that this system was not created equally and that they were doomed to fail.

One of my favorite lines in the movie: “So, you want to start a school with me?” That line sounds crazy and it kinda is, but Gyllenhaal pulls it off in a naïve but I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired kinda way.

Steel Town

Bottom line is I loved it. For so many reasons but here are my top 3:

1) The cinematography was great. I like the lighting and camera movement the director used…

2) Maggie Gyllenhaal always plays a great blue-collar, kinda lose, round-the-way girl.

3) The message: It may not work for everyone and in every situation but the moral of the story is: if we work together and demand better for our children we can get it. It really is that simple; expect more from everyone, the kids, the teachers and the parents.

The situations in the movie are supported by real events but I’m not sure how much is support one story in particular. I will say if you mix “Waiting For Superman” and “The Lottery” and add award winning actors, what you get is “Won’t Back Down”.

After watching I did an internet search and this movie got some horrible reviews. I was so disappointed that people weren’t moved the way I was.

I read a few of the reviews to try and understand why they rated it so poorly. I honestly felt like the “other side” paid people to demonize a movie that sheds light on our poor public school system.  One recent review called the movie “the worst major film in U.S. history”. Really, you haven’t seen “Scary Movie 3” or any of them for that matter?

Another reviewer got key things wrong which told me they didn’t actually watch the film. I point all this out to say, give this movie a chance and take most reviews (not mine)with a grain of salt.

Mind you this is a movie, so it’s sappy and it make some not-so-real-life moves and ties things up nicely at the end but again–it’s a movie not a documentary.  I did not love how she left her daughter with the hot teacher dude to babysit. She knew him, sort of and he was a good guy but…not a protective mom move by a long shot. The writers also seemed to really love the word ‘trepidation’, I counted 4 times it was used but, I think it was repeated mostly by Jaime, mostly to enforce that she may be just a blue collar bartender but she still has a great vocabulary.

Nevertheless, the end, the last 5 seconds of the movie…sealed it for me.

Pour yourself  a glass of red wine, hit up your closest red box and let me know your thoughts.

Cheers!

The Vegas Soulcialite Falls In Love With A Girl

Erykah Badu Live at the Soul Fest

The Annual Las Vegas Soul Fest was held over the weekend at the Thomas and Mack arena. There were concerts on both Saturday and Sunday featuring SWV, Lenny Williams, Joe, Kindred the Family Soul, Mary Mary, etc…all the performers I saw all put on an excellent show.

Side note: Did you know SWV started as a gospel group? Yeah, me neither. **Continues on while scratching head and humming ‘Downtown’. **

Even with all that talent in one place, I have to keep it real; I only had ears for Erykah Badu.

Yeah, she’s a celebrity, a superstar, and an icon, but what Erykah Badu really is, is an artist.

She has said more than once that this is her therapy. I’m not sure if she meant singing, playing an instrument or being on stage–or maybe it’s a sweet mixture of all three.

Her songs are a soothing flow of lyrics intricately created from her complex mind. Her body has sifted through personal beliefs, feelings and emotions and spit them out for the world to hear. Her words and songs aren’t esoteric or abstract, nope, they make perfect sense to anyone who has doubted themselves, loved, lost, felt broken or thrown away.

Erykah Badu always gives the audience her all...

I’m a recovering undercover over-lover  recovering from a love I can’t get over

recovering undercover over-lover  and now my common law lover thinks he wants another

And I’d lie for you  I’d cry for you  and pop for you  and break for you  and hate for you

And I’ll hate you too  If you want me too  Ah, Uuu…

I’d pray for you  crochet for you  Make it from scratch for you

Leave out the last for you  Go to the store for you  Do it some more for you

Do what you want me to

Yes I’m a fool for you…

From: “Out My Mind, Just In Time”

She has put music to my mistakes, my sadness; melody to the words that make up my life, because just like me…she drank the Kool-aid. This chick just said she would crochet for you, make it from scratch for you!

Of course I’ve denied drinking it. But in fact, I’ve gone out bought and mixed the Kool-Aid myself because I loved it so much… So yeah, I did make it from scratch and knitted too… (Heavy sigh)

But, like a true friend she doesn’t give me crap about it.

I love her energy and spirit; her sense of fearlessness (see Window Seat video) and her obvious passion for life, love and of course for music.

She has done thousands of shows but, Saturday was my first opportunity to see her live…and it did something to me. I’ve always been a fan of her music and unique style but, witnessing her in person and watching her perform made me fall in love with her.

Ms. Badu at Thomas and Mack

Even 15 year old songs felt new and organic as she belted out each verse from her soul. The sounds came from a collection of intangible experiences and it was as if she and the music were intertwined in a secret love affair that I got to witness from the 4th row.

I’ve seen a lot of concerts in Vegas, but what I don’t get to see often is artists perform. Ms. Badu didn’t just show up and half-ass sing her greatest hits and exit stage right. She gave us a show. Over the years I’ve witnessed performers going through the motions like a minimum wage worker and I always question why they even bother. If you don’t love it or believe in what you’re doing then stop. Reevaluate and change course. Erykah said before she finished that life is too short to be anyone but you, and I agree.

She had me feeling so fulfilled I bought one of her t-shirts from the vendor outside–another first for me!

The Shirt 033   "The Shirt" from the back...

I spent the next day cutting and slashing the $20 shirt so that it would fit my style. You like? If you’re interested in sexifying one of your old or new t-shirts I will post a mini how-to pictorial on my Facebook page. (This means you need to be my friend to see it, don’t worry all you have to do is ask :)

Ms. Badu is best enjoyed with a whisky sour on the rocks, or wine, or beer…oh, who am I kidding? She goes with everything.

Cheers!

The Vegas Soulcialite Needs A Cocktail

Friday and Saturday’s are great nights for partying. But sometimes the work week requires a mid-week event to keep you from losing your mind; especially if your weekends are just as busy as your weekdays. **Raises hand**

So a Wednesday night happy hour is exactly what the Doctor ordered.

Neo-Soul Happy Hour has been the place to be for more than 2 years now. It recently moved locations to Bagatelle Supper Club inside the Tropicana Hotel, a step up from the Blue Martini, in my opinion.

The weekly event is put together by two of my favorite gentlemen in the city Devin Moore and John Harrison of BlackVegas.com. They both do a fabulous job every week making sure we all have a great time, and that’s no easy task with 400+ people coming in ready to let their hair down.

Tonight happens to be the launch of the “Wednesday Night Neo-Soul Happy Hour”.  I was cool with Tuesdays, but Wednesday is hump day so what better way to celebrate getting through half of your work week then to hang with some of Las Vegas’ who’s who.

On any given week you may run into county commissioners, senators, radio and television personalities, hot-shot lawyers, authors, as well as local and national celebrities…and of course the Vegas Soulcialite always has a table front and center.

Bagatelle really is a hidden jewel on the Strip. I’d never heard of it before February, but then again the spot has changed names more times than I can count—that’s Vegas for you.

Lots of locals hate the Strip, but Bagatelle makes it easy with separate valet and self parking right off of Tropicana, so no parking garages or five-mile hikes to get to your destination. The entrance bypasses the casino and all the Las Vegas extras that we locals snub our nose at.

The white interior and crystal chandeliers give it a classy upscale feel. But the best part is the place is all ours… sort of. Of course others can come hang out but due to its ‘tucked away feel’ they don’t get a lot of off the street drop-ins. It’s more like a private club, just for the grown and sexy of Las Vegas.

The menu is tapas style–small bites including lettuce wraps, calamari, and veggie skewers, from about $7 to $9.

They don’t have a dedicated happy hour drink menu but they have a fabulous gin cocktail with muddled raspberry. I can never remember the name…but it comes in a champagne glass. Believe me; the server will know what you’re talking about.

Neo-Soul Happy hour is every Wednesday from 5:30pm-until you have to go home. Keep up with what’s happening on their Facebook page here.

Cheers!

The Vegas Soulcialite Rocks The Rockhouse

058So what exactly does a dive bar inside a 5 star resort on the Las Vegas strip look like?

That was the burning question when the VIP invite to the official grand opening of the Rockhouse at the Venetian Hotel showed up in my email inbox.

It was open bar, how could I not go? Besides this is work. People depend on me to write about Las Vegas shenanigans and I refuse to let my readers down; all 7 of you.

Basically it looks like a step up from the bar down the street from my house, classier with lots of expensive Andy Warhol and graffiti-esque art plastered on the walls, but not so classy that you can’t play a round of beer pong with your friends. The girls are all toned and hot and may dance on the bar if you ask nicely…that’s something else I don’t think your average hole-in-wall has. Bottom line, it’s a fun spot that’s not extra uptight and pretentious like you would expect inside a 5-star resort.

Did I mention they have a bull? Cause, you know, riding bull is always a great idea after a couple of drinks…that’s right up there with drunk texting your ex.

I will say that my margaritas were on point and they weren’t even made with my premium go-to tequila, Herradura.

And for only $50 bucks you too can have an all day/night open bar pass. That’s a deal on Strip.

Cheers!
